Joseph W. Thomson, Partner

Born and reared in Starkville, Mississippi, Joe attended The University of Mississippi, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accountancy in 1974, and a Juris Doctor in 1978. Joe completed requirements to become a Certified Public Accountant in 1976, and in 1978 he moved to Houston and joined the firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co.
Joe joined Larry Maddox in 1985, and together started the accounting firm of Maddox Thomson & Associates, P.C. In 1988, he completed the requirements to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) certificant. With the founding of Horizon Advisors in 1999, Joe and Larry were able to add investment planning and investment management services to their financial planning services. In 2008 Joe was accepted as a member of the National Association of Financial Advisors (NAPFA). Joe's focus at both Maddox, Thomson & Associates and Horizon Advisors is client relationships, business development, and income and estate tax planning.
Married to the former Anne Sewell, Joe has three sons who were born in Houston. Joe is an active member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, serving on its Vestry and as Junior Warden. Joe is also a member of the Houston Country Club. In the past, Joe served in various capacities on the Board of Directors, as an Officer, and as a Coach in the Post Oak Pony and Little Leagues.
